Noynoy Aquino’s Opening Statement at ANC’s “Harapan”

HARAPAN: THE ANC PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE
Opening Statement

Dec 2 2009

Many have said that it was my good fortune to have been born into my family. My father was touted as the next president and was considered one of the most influential people of his time.

The lessons of my childhood were driven home by my family’s experiences during Martial Law. These years were some of the most difficult we had to endure, but they were also the most influential in shaping my life and who I am today.

The Filipino people’s faith in us is what gives us strength. As long as the people are with us in the fight for change, I am confident that we can address the many problems this administration has created and will leave behind.

        to juan dela cruz,

    In reply to Hotchic (below):

Hacienda Luisita – This is a corporation. Not solely owned by Sen. Noynoy and his family. Issues regarding the Hacienda are being taken up during meetings of the corporation.
Refer to Sen. Noynoy’s reply to a question from Ted Failon during the Juan on One segment of TV Patrol, aired 25 or 26 NOV 2009. You can get this thru http://www.pinoychannel.tv

Sen. Aquino stated that the Hacienda issue, if it were left for him to decide, he would distribute the land to the 10,000 or so benficiaries. HOWEVER. Since the Hacienda has incurred huge debts, distributing this to the beneficiaries, would add bruden to the farmers, because they would be unable to sustain the debt repayment. Sen. Noynoy would rather that when the land is finally distributed to the rightful beneficiaries, it would be debt free (which, the Aquino family could be negotiating with debtors, prior to distribution.
People who clamor and instigate the beneficiaries to demand that these land be distributed post haste, somewhat have vested interest on it, since these instigators could very well be in the “know” that the farmers could NOT repay the debt and therfore, sell their lands at losing value or forfeit it altogether.

Presently the land in Hacienda Luisita can not be toiled, once distributed to the rightful beneficiaries, how could they repay the debt?

Sen. Noynoy Aquino, could probably be holding a mere 1% stake on the whole property, so why not ask the major holders / shareholders of the property.
Why single out Senator Noynoy Aquino and his siblings alone? People could probably be barking up at the wrong tree, kaya medyo natatagalan ang proseso ng Hacienda Luisita.

You may ask how the Hacienda incurred so much debt… Look into the history of the activities of the farmers themselves. They were the ones who contributed most to this, due to “strikes” that they initiated in the first place.

I am an ordinary Filipino, who lives an onrdinary life, but have the sense and decency to see for myself what is rigfht and what is wrong. Who is being abusive, and who is being abused. I must say that the G;oria Arroyo and her family, in connivance with their minions are the abusive ones, not Ninoy, Cory, Noynoy, Ballsy, Pinky, Viel and Kris.

Favor : Please update me on the land issue owned by the Arroyos, which was subject to litigation and a the leader of the farmers having been murdered….Thank you.

u wer claiming that ur from tarlac.. talaga lang ha? but u dont know the history of hacienda luisita?? OMG! i find u pathetic.. pro cge here’ s a link were u can find wat ur asking for. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacienda_Luisita

and here’ a bit of history kc baka di mo man alam hanapin yang link that i provided..

Hacienda Luisita was once part of the holdings of Compañia General de Tabacos de Filipinas, better known as Tabacalera. The estate is named after Luisa, the wife of the head of Tabacalera, Don Antonio Lopez, when the company acquired the estate in 1882. In the 1950s, the onset of the Hukbalahap rebellion led the Spanish owners of Tabacalera to sell Hacienda Luisita and the sugar mill Central Azucarera de Tarlac. The Cojuangcos acquired the property in 1958 through a loan from the Government Service Insurance System and a dollar loan from the Manufacturers Trust Company of New York, which was guaranteed by the Central Bank of the Philippines. At present, the property is owned and managed by Hacienda Luisita Incorporated which was established on August 23, 1988.[1]

—–o yan nangutang daw sila mabili lang ung hacienda.. kundi ka pa masaya dyan punta ka TSU sa COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES.. dun ako nag graduate.. hanapin mo Prof. LINO DIZON or Doctor LEN DAVID madami silang books about hacienda lusita and its history. get some education and be informed… wag maging dayuhan sa sarili mo bayan para naman di masyadong nakakahiya sa amin..

The Cojuangcos have often garnered criticism for their ownership of the estate. Leftists have painted it as a symbol of the country’s paralyzing oligarchy, with the country’s most powerful figures all having stakes in the property.[3] The estate’s incorporators, who control 70 percent of Hacienda Luisita’s stock shares, are Noynoy Aquino’s uncles and aunts; Pedro Cojuangco, Josephine Reyes, Jose Cojuangco, Jr., Teresita A. Lopa, and Paz Teopaco, all brothers and sisters of Cory Aquino.[4] The remaining 30 percent of the stock shares was given to farm workers under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program’s stock distribution option scheme.[2]

Noynoy Aquino has expressed his opinion that it would be better for his family to give up their rights to the estate, stating that as long as they were involved, the issue of land redistribution there would always be politically-colored

        mahirap umintindi ang AYAW MAKAINTINDI.

comment on ABS-CBN’s ‘Harapan’ and i want to share wid everyone to shed some light on certain issues. MR. VALENTIN BONITE’s obrservation, for me, are all correct. pls take time to read this..

In last night’s debate of presidential candidates aired on ANC, Gilbert Teodoro came in close second to Noynoy. However his rating may have been different if people really listened well to the substance of what he said, which should have forewarned everyone of the true Gibo, in contrast to his obviously packaged image.
When asked about GMA, Gibo proudly declared, as if it really was virtuous of him, that it would be the height of ingratitude if he would bite the hand, so to speak, of the person who gave him the break. The statement did not really surprise me because it came from a person who lives in a world where favors are dispensed with in order to wield influence over certain people, or where favors are exchanged for their mutual benefits and always to the prejudice of the people whom the profess to serve. What is unfortunate though was how the people and certain pundits even approved of what they heard. It is clear that everyone forgot that this kind of attitude is precisely the root cause of corruption, that even priests would forget about their priestly duties after being beneficiaries of countless favors from certain politicians, that they would refuse even just to open their mouths amidst all the corruption around them, opting to remain tight-lipped, which is precisely what Gibo is doing as far as the administration of GMA is concerned. Gibo’s statement tells us about two things, first, that he will not take action against anyone to whom he is indebted, and, that he is willing to dispense favors himself if only to buy the loyalty of anyone. This, the people must understand, breeds corruption and is the source of injustice. The same also leads me to ask this question, if Gibo is really the person that his supporters would always proudly tell us that he is, then why on earth would he be so insecure and seemingly so helpless so as to be beholden to the person who he said gave him the break? Was his topping the bar not enough break for him? Of course I know of many lawyers who barely passed the bar but are better lawyers than the topnotchers. So, what’s there to crow about? Finally, he declared that he will convene a so called council of elders. Why, does he not have the confidence to perform the duties of a president even when the same are already clearly spelled out in the constitution, that convening a council is already absolutely unnecessary? Where is the much ballyhooed competence?

Hacienda Luisita offered its genuine farmer-beneficiaries a Stock Distribution Option (SDO). The farmers received this option in formal referendum in 1989

The Stock Distribution Option (“SDO”) is an option provided under Section 3(a) of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law for a corporation owning an agricultural land, like HLI, as a mechanism to distribute shares of capital stock, as opposed to small parcels of land, to qualified farmer-beneficiaries.

Under the proposed SDO of Hacienda Luisita, the farmer-beneficiaries will become stock holders of the corporation, and in effect, co-owners of the hacienda. The features of the SDO include:

      1. Acquisition and distribution, on the basis of number of days worked during the year, the entire block of 118,391,976.85 shares of capital stock in HLI

      2. Four (4) seats in the Board of Directors allotted to the farmer-beneficiaries;

      3. Share in the production equivalent to 3% of gross sales of HLI, in addition to what the farmers receive as regular salaries and wages; and

      4. Award of free residential home lots of not less than 240 square meters each to family beneficiaries.

HLI entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (“MOA”) with the TDC and the genuine farmer-beneficiaries, which embodied the basics and the mechanics of the SDO. In a referendum conducted on 24 October 1989 under DAR Secretary Philip Ella Juico, 92.6% of farmer-beneficiaries approved the SDO. In another referendum conducted by the PARC under DAR Secretary Miriam Defensor-Santiago, 96.27% of the farmer-beneficiaries voted for the adoption of the SDO. The MOA was formally approved by the PARC on 21 November 1989.
